Are You Real?: "We Are the Wild Things"
"This is one of the most interesting things in the Italian indie scene!": here's how the major italian newspaper La Repubblica described the obscure, self-produced, bedroom recorded music of Are You Real? at its first appearance, back in 2012. Behind the moniker was the Venice-based musician Andrea Liuzza, a multi-instrumentalist with a radical do-it-yourself approach. His songs are a mix of the open-hearted songwriting of artists like Bright Eyes, Sparklehorse, Daniel Johnston, with a peculiar imaginative touch and dreamy atmosphere, inspired by the worlds of directors like Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry as well as fairytales and children's illustrations. His new album, Songs From My Imaginary Youth, takes the listener in a painful, magical and exultant trip through the glorious mess of youth's experiences: love, illusions, friendship. The single, We Are The Wild Things, sums up these themes, being inspired by the classic Maurice Sendak's illustrated book Where The Wild Things Are and featuring 30 friends of the author singing in a choir. Lately, the many years of self-production has turned into a real job: beside his own music, Andrea is now working as an artistic producer for many Italian bands and running the indie label Beautiful Losers.
