Barton Hartshorn: "Paper Man"
Barton Hartshorn is a singer-songwriter currently living in Paris and his latest single “Paper Man” is from his album "I Died Of Boredom & Came Back As Me" was written and recorded between Australia, Europe and the USA.
“I was delighted the song got picked as a single in the USA and was then nominated for best lyrics in the American Songwriter award! I never would have imagined all that when I wrote it during a heatwave at Christmas in Australia. I remember re-writing the verse because it was too close to Jeff Buckley's 'Last Goodbye' and then playing it over and over again on a classical guitar until everyone in the house was sick of it!
The video came about because the American record label asked for a really simple video, one that showed just me singing the song, nothing more. I wanted something a bit more original and then saw a photo taken by Astrid Kirchherr in the early 60s. It was of the late Stuart Sutcliffe in Hamburg - often referred to as the 5th Beatle - and Astrid can be seen in the mirror behind him holding the camera. There's something quite magical about the shot and I could almost see her moving, see the photo coming to life. That's where the idea came from, from staring too long at a monochrome photo.”
Barton's next album will be released in 2020 with new tracks appearing early next year…
