Interview: Diane Foster
Diane Foster is a multi-talented award winning American actress-singer-dancer-producer based in Los Angeles. In 2018, Diane launched her own production company, WallyBird Productions, to create and produce all forms and genres of media with an emphasis on diversity and gender equality.
We had the pleasure of checking in with Diane and she was kind enough to respond to a few interview questions.
Before we look to the next 10 years, what have you personally noticed that has changed in the movie industry over the past decade?
We have moved the needle forward on more women in positions they have not historically had, but we need to push way harder. We also are done with the bullshit of allowing people in power to take advantage of others. We are shedding a light on the injustices that have plagued the industry, but there is much more work to do so that people from every background and all over the world can see themselves represented in cinema, music and tv.
What will the landscape look like for female directors a decade from now?
My wish is that it's filled with female visionaries and we will look back and say,"can you believe that women had to fight hard to be at these tables?' That it becomes the norm and not such a constant historic conversation. Women are natural and dynamic storytellers and my company, WallyBird Productions is committed to gender equality and diversity. It is my hope that we have many more female filmmakers and BIPOC filmmakers able to make a difference through their stories so that young women of every background will grow up having much more opportunities and accessibility and that we all see the value of how much representation matters.
Do you think there are certain genres that simply aren’t going to come out in theatres anymore?
It's hard to say. I am a big lover of seeing a film in the theatre and the thought of it going away is rather dreadful. I believe it's hard to fill seats with dramas and films that aren't blockbusters. Also, everyone has become used to watching on their phones and home televisions. It will be interesting to see the shift in what will happen in the future to cinema but, to me, one thing is clear, film is forever.
Do you have a favorite film you have directed?
I am currently in pre-production on my first feature film I'm directing. It's a horror comedy, a classic story re-imagined and to be able to create the pulse and vision of this project is something I can't sleep over because I'm so excited. We are looking at shooting in April 2021 so stay tuned!
What projects do you have coming up?
WallyBird Productions is already lining up it's slate for the new year. We have two documentaries, two feature films, one that I am directing, a television pilot, and a series of music videos we are creating in pre production and in development on all with incredible talent. We are so excited to share these voices of new filmmakers/writers and their important and timely stories that will make this world a more entertaining and better place for all.
