Kiirstin Marilyn: "Legacy"
Legacy is the second single from the upcoming debut album There Are No Cats in America from vegan human rights activist, and alt-pop singer-songwriter, Kiirstin Marilyn. Utilizing heavy-hitting electronic elements contrasted with a sweet - and often despondent - vocal, this album is a collection of 13 songs that tell the story of an empath, anti-capitalist, and first-generation American living in the 21st century.
Set to release on October 23, 2020, There Are No Cats in America will feel like it was created to reflect the year 2020. However, Marilyn and her producer, Adam Tilzer, have been hard at work since 2018, and a few toplines were written by Marilyn as far back as 2014.
Kiirstin Marilyn felt it was time to use her artistry to give voice to issues that led her to activism. From veganism to feminism, this album tackles major systemic problems we face as a global society in a way that is true to the artist herself. With tongue in cheek lyrics in songs like “The American Dream,” in your face exclamations in “Feminism is the Radical Notion that Women are People,” and the sobering lament of “The Takers,” There Are No Cats in America illustrates the diversity and complexity found within a single human being.
“I finally stopped making music I thought other people wanted to hear and started making music I wanted to listen to,” says Marilyn. “I’m also not just one thing, and I was tired of being put in a box recognized solely as a female-identifying artist. I can be deadly serious while also being light-hearted and funny. I’m done with society being shocked by this combination. I’m not here to mesmerize people into spending their money on the latest trend. I’m here as an artist and activist to help liberate humanity from all that is holding us back.”
The album also features two cover songs from counterculture artists, John Lennon and Nirvana. Tilzer and Marilyn carefully crafted these tracks to remain true to the original artists’ intent while fitting seamlessly within the rest of Marilyn’s album. The songs “Working Class Hero” by Lennon and “Something in the Way” by Nirvana were also meticulously chosen to blend with the overarching themes of the album.
