148: Sampati
148 are Canadian artists born and raised in Nigeria with a love for music and a playful yet assertive lyrical disposition. Their upbringing in Africa during the age of MTV's revolution allowed both individuals to embrace a multitude of genres, which they incorporate into their creative process. Their willingness to explore genres and embrace their vulnerability to learn, improve and take risks is what contributes to 148's unique sound.
Tudo Bem & McQueen perfectly complement each other to create a rich, melodic sound that delivers a warm tone that touches the heart and soul. Their music is unique, creates a bounce in the room, and delivers a sonic space where listeners can feel free and be inspired to strive for their own freedom. In totality, the core principle behind 148 is based on a journey and a belief that we should all strive to be who we truly are, rather than view ourselves through the lens of others.
The origin of Sampati follows a Hindu story of 2 brothers who challenged each other to see who could fly closest to the sun. The elder brother, Sampati, ends up risking his life to shield his younger brother, Jatayu, from the flames. A sacrifice that costs Sampati his ability to fly but saves his brother’s life, who goes on to play a crucial part in the grand scheme of things. The story brings to light many questions such as, if you knew there was a high possibility of failure would you attempt the impossible? For us, the answer is always yes. As failure brings the opportunity to learn and the potential of a speedy recovery with the help of friends and family.
