Aaron Nevezie: "Obsidian"
Releasing today, Obsidian is the beat-driven EP by Aaron Nevezie. Following 2019’s ambient improv offering Weird Precious Things, this work is an intentional left turn towards twisted dance music.
Finished during the Covid-19 lockdown, the tracks avoid the angst of the period and instead celebrate the space and time to dig deeper into one’s obsessions. The music morphs between dark and light, liquid and knife-edged, much like the formation of obsidian. Stylistically it nods to the ambient works of Aphex Twin, the Buchla textures of Floating Points, and the subtle techno of Stephan Bodzin.
Favorites include the opener Dark Patterns which establishes a mysterious sonic world of chattering mono synth before breaking into classic Moog bass four on the floor, and Early Mirrors—a medium-tempo electro-funk that features Buchla Music Easel bass bubbling under a floating Juno melody. Spherulites, Obsidian, and Glass Knife all stay in the groove established early in the EP. Analog synths, drum machines, and modular sequences come and go trading voices and focus. The ambient track Pohara rounds out the EP with Eno-like Prophet 5 chords and a time-stretched iPhone recording made while hiking in the South Island of New Zealand.
