Dan Fuson: Familiar, Brand New
When Dan Fuson first bought his recording gear 12 months ago, it was mainly on a whim. Fuson had been writing songs and performing in bands for years but never attempted to put his own ideas to tape until a year ago.
Cut to summer 2020 and Familiar, Brand New, an EP completely self-recorded in Fuson’s bedroom, is set to be released on July 10th.
The first single from the EP, “Shallow Blue,” has received attention from a slew of indie music blogs, including It’s All Indie, Mystic Sons, and Turtle Tempo. The site Indie Top 39 described the single as having “such a dynamic yet sunny sound to it, which culminates to create a brilliantly triumphant and festival-ready atmosphere.”
Featuring a four songs ranging from the up-tempo rocker “Run” to the melancholy “The Architect,” Familiar, Brand New is a bit of old school rock meets songwriter mentality and performance, combined with modern production and mixing techniques. Recording all the guitars, vocals, and synths in his room, Fuson enlisted Brandon Davis and Jeffrey Anthony to record drums and lifelong friends Sarah Menefee and Kendall Theile to sing backing vocals.
“This is not only a culmination of my life in music in the last year, this is really the first true marker of who I am as an artist,'“ says Fuson. “Familiar, Brand New is me at my most honest, even when it hurts to do that.”
