Davy Lyons: This Is
Wexford-born folk singer-songwriter Davy Lyons: This Is
by Jack Rush
On November 22nd, Wexford-born folk singer-songwriter Davy Lyons unveiled This Is, the third and final single from his live album Live at Underpool, Yes!, recorded in Barcelona with his jazz band and just released today through King Forward Records.
This Is, a haunting solo piece featuring only Lyons’ voice and acoustic guitar, is a heartfelt rendition of a song originally by Dublin band Aslan. The track holds deep personal resonance for Lyons, as it pays tribute to Aslan's lead singer Christy Dignam, who passed away in the summer of 2023. “After he died,” Lyons shares, “I began listening again to Aslan’s music, for the first time in many years, particularly their album ‘Made in Dublin’. This song is the one that captured me most—the rawness of it, straight from the heart. I played it at home and put it on the record.”
The single stands apart on Live at Underpool, Yes! as the only solo performance among an otherwise dynamic, jazz-infused set. Stripped back to its bare essentials, This Is places Lyons’ expressive vocals and Dignam’s lyricism front and centre, offering an intimate glimpse into his artistry. The recording is more than a cover; it is Lyons’ way of honouring an Irish musical legacy while highlighting his own commitment to storytelling through song. Lyons' album, Live at Underpool, Yes!, recorded with his band in Barcelona, presents a unique fusion of Irish folk roots with jazz improvisation—a testament to his versatility and dedication to crafting authentic musical experiences. With This Is as an emotional centrepiece, the album invites listeners on a journey through the themes of connection, homage, and musical heritage.
Recorded at Underpool Studios Barcelona in July 2023. Studio engineer, Sergi Felipe. Mix by Juan Rodríguez Berbín. Master by Victor García.
