Delia Meshlir: Something On Your Mind
Delia Meshlir releases two covers of the classics "Something On Your Mind" and "Bang Bang", continuing the close ties Karen Dalton and Dalida shared with reinterpreting songs. Delia Meshlir’s very personal take on both tracks once again highlights the wonderful strength and refinement of her voice.
Earlier this year, Swiss artist Delia Meshlir released 'Calling The Unknown', an album on which she explored the most complex facets of love. She now unveils the covers of songs by two women who left a long-lasting mark on her: Karen Dalton's 'Something On Your Mind' and Dalida's cover of 'Bang Bang' on Irascible/BaDaBing Records.
Delia Meshlir is no stranger to Karen Dalton's world, as some of her compositions were featured in the documentary "A Bright Light-Karen And The Process" (2018) by Emanuelle Antille, for which she then toured Switzerland with Laure Betris and Melissa Kassab to accompany the release. For this cover, she starts off dreamy and ethereal before taking a 60's rock turn, laying her velvet-like vocals where Karen Dalton's rockier ones once were. She sings about a world we don't really understand, but in which we must evolve nevertheless, like an invitation to never give up. Her version came to her during a dream which she then transcribed note by note.
The cover of “Bang Bang" also came to her very spontaneously, born from an improvisation during which she repeated a hypnotic arpeggio, evoking the sounds of a Wurlitzer. The track was the perfect opportunity for Delia Meshlir to explore her Italian roots and to try her hand at singing in a language that has captivated her since childhood but that she isn’t fluent in.
The two tracks were recorded in the spring of 2022 at the home studio Delia Meshlir shares with her partner and guitarist Steven Navid.
