Interview: Freaky Farm
Swiss-based Freaky Farm is back with the new single “Grasp The Nettle”.
Deliberately anachronistic and in antithesis with the current era, Freaky Farm’s new single “Grasp The Nettle” explores the border between light and darkness, where distorted rhythms and harmonic attempts create an eternal pursuit, without the certainty of ever meeting.
It is an anarchic and uncompromising expressive essay, filled with an imperfect spontaneity that consciously clashes with today's tendency to embellish and retouch the imperfection that lies at the heart of artistic expression.
Freaky Farm deliberately abandons certainties to plunge into a dark world where there is no support, where only mere instinct becomes the stick to hold on to.
From extreme darkness to blinding light, in pursuit of perfect harmony and in search of the farm where one can create an autarkic existence.
“Let the nettle be with you!” - Freaky Farm
We recently had a chance to catch up with Freaky Farm and they were kind enough to engage with us for a Q+A interview.
Welcome Freaky Farm! You released a brand new single last week, please tell us about how the project came together and the key contributors to this project?
Freaky Farm is a project based on the friendship between Chris and Moci, two individuals who have known each other for a long time and who share visions and ideals, they are two complementary beings, where one doesn't arrive the other arrives, they know each other so well that often they don't have to communicate with words but a look and telepathy from a distance are enough, they face things with spontaneity, letting the energy flow and since over time they have gained experience they tend to simplify the processes they have to face neutralizing any possible external obstacle at birth.
Who influenced this release and/or who are some of your notable musical influences?
We come from indie, electronic and shoegaze music, our mentality has always been independent and alternative, we take what is good that music has given in history, currently we don't ask ourselves too many questions, we try to make our music without thinking too much, we try to carry on our own style, what comes naturally to us and what we want to do at that moment, the things we do change quite quickly, there are no limits.
What's the story and creative process behind this release? What's the secret sauce?
Everyone approaches things in their own way, we have made spontaneity our mantra, open and let it flow, things come out and manifest themselves spontaneously, if you force it you alter the process, you just have to accompany it, the magic potion is there in front of you, you must not be afraid of falling into the cauldron of the Gallic druid.
Was there anything unique about the recording process itself?
Being together is the most precious thing, sharing the momentum, witnessing the magic where things manifest and happen, these are privileged moments that we have a duty to love and enjoy; being in the studio, in a forest or on a mountain in the Engadine is always a privilege, sharing it together is a wealth and should be experienced as such.
Could you share a memorable quote about this release or your journey as an artist and how did you get started in music and how did you know it was something you wanted to pursue?
As far as we are concerned, these are not questions that we ask ourselves, we have always approached music as an expressive possibility, we think that the fewer questions you ask yourself during the creative process the better, it must not be too neuronal, spontaneity remains the guide and the main road, we start from the assumption that we know things, we just have to remember them.
Is there anything additional that would be valuable to know about your project or this latest release?
Simply that Freaky Farm is a creative laboratory where things happen, we like music but also photography, literature, painting, cinematography, we want to be able to express ourselves in multiple ways allowing the expression to be as complete as possible.
Do you write only when you feel creative or do you keep a routine regardless?
There is no routine, when it's time things happen, in everything and therefore also in writing.
What do you think about the current state of the music industry?
I'll ask you the question again: looking around, what do you see? Without any controversy I tell you that I don't like what I see even if fortunately bastions of healthy and pure creativity resist but you have to go and look for them.
Do you have any recent or upcoming performances to highlight?
No, we are a laboratory and as such we exist, at the moment we do not have any live performances planned, the next step is to start collecting new photographic and video material, therefore outings in nature and in interesting places, these are moments that we really like to share.
