Q & A
Tell us about the key contributors to this project.
I composed, performed and now I'm self releasing The Words I Didn't Say by myself.
Who influenced this release?
Once, I was practicing my set of cover songs before a gig, and while I was starting to play Careless Whisper by George Michael, I was also thinking of my crush at the same time, so my fingers jumped into a baroque and neoclassical solo. I thought to develop a dramatic melody, enriched by a combination of virtuoso, but minimal musical phrases, and chords. Then I made the composition more lively, by using fast chromatic melodic changes, with a hint of psychedelic mood, inspired by progressive rock of the '70s.
What's the story behind this release?
This song was born after I got a crush on a girl I met on a film set. Her aura was so powerful, I was nearly dazzled at once, but though there was a mutual fascination, I didn't allow myself to go any further, as at that time, I was already in a relationship... Actually, I even self-sabotaged most of the interactions with her. That was a way for me to express my idea of being stoic, toward a promising novelty, who was trying to unhinge my emotional certainties. I never believed to the saying "opportunities come, but once". Instead, I truly believe we ourselves attract the right people and opportunities in your life, depending on how mindful we are in our path of personal and spiritual growth. This is even truer nowadays, with the knowledge, technologies and social media we have access to!
Tell us what makes this release stand out and why it's significant
The Words I Didn't Say, it's part of a project of 9 songs I recorded between 2019 and 2020 at the Abbey Road Studios, and at the Soho Sonic Studios. It's a sound diary of my journey into personal and spiritual growth, started in 2014, when I emigrated to the UK from Italy. The entire project, features fragments from different music genres, finely harmonized in vibration and hypnotic sounds, which help the listeners to relax and to meditate.
Where did the recording take place?
This song has been recorded twice in London, as it was part of a project which required a few hours of recording. First of all, at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, and then, the final version, at the Soho Sonic Studios. Needles to say what a blast I had when recording at these two important studios, which have hosted artists of the caliber of The Beatles, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, and so on!
What was unique about the recording process?
The recording only features classical guitar, a Cordoba F7 Paco, named after the Spanish grandmaster of flamenco Paco de Lucia, one of my favourite guitarists. Obviously, since the great sensitivity of the microphones, I had to pay attention to any single noise I was making while recording... even the sound of my breathing!
Do you have any recent or upcoming performances to highlight?
As an eclectic performer, I've been busking in different areas of London, playing for special occasions, or corporate events, always getting the audience appraisal, but at the moment I'm focusing on growing my online fan base. I also worked as a background artist in several movies and music TV shows, such as Artemis Fowl by Kenneth Branagh (Walt Disney), where I was a busker elf, and as an actor for independent movies.
Could you share a memorable quote about this release or your journey as an artist?
Music is for me a way to express and share my journey into personal and spiritual growth, with Fabio Cicala - The Words I Didn't Say. Page 2/3 the people around me. A way to transmute pain into strength, as it has already healed me several times, it's a powerful tool that turns me into an alchemist!
Is there anything additional that would be valuable for curators to know?
This song is part of a music project called Rude Awakening, a collection of tunes for classical guitar, which is a kaleidoscope of sounds, encompassing several genres and styles. I called it Rude Awakening, because it's about the unique event each of us go through at least once in a lifetime, which triggers us to dig into ourself and to restart our life in a more empowered way. It's music for meditation with A tuned at 432 Hz. By coincidence the day, month, and year of my birth, reduced in single digit numbers, comes just to 432!
