Isiah & The New People: When Doves Fly
When Folk Meets Prince: Isiah & The New People’s Haunting Cover of ‘When Doves Cry’
Isiah & The New People is a collective of musicians from the Appleton, WI US area. After earning their songwriting and performance stripes in different projects and bands, they banded together on the fly to play at local festivals and build their own festival in Little Chute.
After feeling the synergy of their creativity and picking up some local radio airplay, Ric Armstrong (drums), Jason Reisdorf (sax), Alec Riegsecker (bass), and Isiah Driessen (vocals/guitar) hit the studio to record their debut EP, Boxes; the first of many releases set to come from the unpigeonholeable emissaries of innovation
And now the Wisconsin emissaries of Western Psych Folk have guided Prince’s single, When Doves Cry, through their own emotional landscape. Surpassing paying homage, the cover resonates on a much deeper level as you live vicariously through the personal pain of falling victim to a tragic circumstance which leads you away from love.
As the vocals tremble under the intensity of voicing the ache of a soul mourning the loss of a partner while still consumed by love for them, the expressive acoustic guitar work visualises the fire that still burns within.
Stripped of its synth-pop hooks, When Doves Cry is transformed under Isiah & The New People’s touch, with emotion bleeding through the production, resonating with the tender visceralism of playing broken heartstrings on a fretboard.
Isiah & The New People said:
"A year and a half ago, I was in a car accident that took my friend's life and left my wife with a traumatic brain injury. I suffered multiple broken bones and was confined to a wheelchair for some time. The aftermath of the accident changed everything, including my marriage, which eventually led to the painful decision to part ways with someone I still love. This cover captures that heartbreak. When I added the 'me and you' part, I envisioned looking into a mirror, facing the fear of stepping into a new chapter of life, alone.”
