Jemily Rime: Kinda Liked It
Jemily Rime Captures the Beauty of Introversion in "Kinda Liked It"
by Jack Rush
French jazz-pop singer-songwriter and bassist Jemily Rime returns with her latest single, "Kinda Liked It," a track that perfectly encapsulates the delicate balance between longing and detachment. Now based in Cambridge, UK, Jemily has been crafting her unique sound since childhood, having started on the piano at just three years old. Over time, her musical journey led her to singing, composing, and mastering the bass guitar.
Jemily first gained recognition as a semi-finalist in the 2016 International Songwriting Competition with her song "Priceless." While studying astrophysics and quantum mechanics at King's College London, she penned the tracks for her debut album, Otters Mate for Life (2018), a genre-blending collection infused with pop, rock, soul, funk, and jazz. Her sophomore release, Butterfly Minute (2022), showcased her talents not only as a songwriter and performer but also as a producer, presenting a series of sonic vignettes that captured fleeting emotions and artistic inspirations.
Having played at esteemed venues like Sunset Sunside (Jazz Sur Seine festival) and the Paris Jazz Café, Jemily has steadily built her reputation in the jazz and pop music scenes. Since 2024, she has become a fixture in the UK live circuit, headlining at venues such as The Signature Brew and The Star of Shoreditch. With performances at the O2 Academy Islington in February 2025 and a return to Sunset (Paris) set for April, she is gearing up for the release of a new EP, which promises to push her song-writing into more fusion-inspired territory.
A Wallflower’s Night Out
"Kinda Liked It" offers a fresh take on the party scene—through the lens of an introvert. With a blend of raw vulnerability and sultry confidence, Jemily portrays the sensory overload of a bustling night out, seen from the perspective of someone more comfortable on the sidelines than in the spotlight.
Rooted in jazz but layered with an '80s-inspired dance groove, the track features a bass-driven rhythm and lush harmonies that create an immersive soundscape. Her lyrics playfully navigate the blurred lines between fantasy and reality: "I had a great time last night, was just fine (...)/I’m sure you couldn't tell, you were just under my spell/ Aren’t I lovely in despair." Was she truly reveling in the moment, or simply caught up in the illusion of it? The following day’s introspection hints at the answer: "Let it be known I need hours today and hours tomorrow just to feel OK." It’s a sentiment introverts everywhere will recognize.
A Glimpse into Phantom Feels
Written and produced by Jemily Rime, "Kinda Liked It" is the first single from her upcoming EP, Phantom Feels, set to release later this year. With jazz-fusion elements woven into infectious pop melodies, the project aims to give voice to emotions that linger long after their moment has passed. Its aesthetic—equal parts whimsical, vintage, and haunting—mirrors the delicate balance of nostalgia and detachment found in Jemily’s songwriting and production.
