John Bringwolves: "Fake to Say"

Giovanni Portaluppi, aka John Bringwolves, was born in Biella, a small mountain town between Turin and Milan. At the age of 6 he discovered drums and percussion, which he studied with Paolo Cerlati. This latter gave him the opportunity to play around Italy together with 40 other percussionists as part of a project called Tum Tribù. After playing drums, sticks, pots, pumpkins, hang and jembe for quite some time, the age of 12 seems like the time for the electric guitar, which he studied with Giancarlo Pini and, after him, with his son Martino. With them, he will explore new sonorities, orienting himself more towards rock, blues and funk. In 2010, together with Luca Biaggi, Matteo Lorenzi and Lorenzo Martinotti he founded the rock-pop band Entropia. With this band he recorded a debut EP called “Il tempo del rifiuto” (“The time of refuse”) and played several gigs around Italy, such as at the Heineken Jammin’ Festival and at the Collisioni Festival. Moreover, in 2013 the band won the Tour Music Fest in Rome and was shortlisted as finalist to the auditions for X-Factor 2016. Still, in 2017 the strong influences of electronic music made him split from the band and devote himself to a more systematic research in the field of sound design closely related to art, especially in short movies and documentaries. In this path of experimentation, every new musical object became like a new character to get to know and to become friend with. For these reasons, he kept on studying guitar, this time with Matteo Salvadori in Turin, and started some parallel collaborations: one with DJ Feib in a fusion project between scratch and guitar, and another one with Vlad Vraciu on the machines and Riccardo Sara on tenor saxophone, in a project called Gramophone Live. During the daily commutings around the Turin province, he discovered the production of electronic music on his iPad. Here he started to give a sonorous shape to his musical thoughts inspired by the observation of a reality made of people, benches, trains and landscapes. Finally in January 2018, after a long trip in Chile, he came back to Italy with in mind a solo project under the pseudonym of John Bringwolves. Therefore, he fully commits to studying electronic music production and mixing at the Gamma Music Institute of Turin and starts writing his own original music taking his steps from the obsessive listening of artists focused on sampling and electronic atmospheres (Four Tet, Jamie XX, Burial, Romare, Kalabrese, Aphex Twin).

Today John Brinwolves’ live sets are a whole onyric trip, which takes shape through funky-blues guitars, electro-ambient synths and uptempo drum-machines. In a responsive meeting between analog and digital instruments he explores experimental sonorities, samples from the past, street sounds and visual art.
