Kevin ISM: Sane in Insane Places
Who is Kevin ISM? No one knows very much about Kevin ISM, other than he is based in Ireland and has been recording and performing for a number of years to a selective and eclectic audience. There are rumours, of course .... his association with Dublin based bands such as U2, the Frames, Blue Pyramid and Terra Firma. Brief appearances in Oscar winning movies. Lucrative contracts to keep quiet. Maybe you already know him?
In any case, his recent single “Sane in Insane Places” was inspired by an experiment done in the 1970s on admissions to Mental Health Facilities. They asked people to refrain from washing for 2-3 days and to show up at their local lunatic asylum (mental health facility in modern parlance) and to say they were hearing voices. Almost all were admitted (committed). The participants were also told that on the second day, they should tell the doctors that the voices were gone. The experiment was to see how long these "patients" remained hospitalized : some were kept in for up to 3 months! They re-ran the experiments in the early 2000s and, although patients were no longer hospitalized, almost all were prescribed anti-depressants! Now that’s what I call some crazy shit!
