Nevin: "Backseat Show"
Ambient guitars, nostalgic synths and honest lyrics. Nevin is an Amsterdam based singer/songwriter looking for new ways to get her stories told. Influenced by a broad range of styles like dream pop, folk and dark electro, Nevin has created her own eclectic sound combining spheric elements and storytelling.
Growing up, Nevin weirdly enough wasn't very fascinated by music. She would rather spend her time in ballet classes and finding her expressive outlet in the fine arts. Not until she discovered Avril Lavigne at the age of 11, fascinated by her songwriting Nevin immediately wanted to learn how to play the piano.
Songwriting became her new outlet. This led to years of discovering new artists and new ways of adaptive writing and composing.
mid 2020 Nevin started working together with Melvin Rijlaarsdam. Together they created her first EP, which will come out near the end of 2021. Her songs are charged with sensitive topics such as heartbreak, abuse, growing pains and self discovery.
“When people listen to my music, I want them to feel like they are in a conversation with themselves. How do these lyrics resonate with you? I always found that was the beautiful thing about songwriting, the unconscious interaction.” - Nevin
Her latest sinlge “Backseat Show” is a song about losing control. The song takes place in the backseat of a car, in which the protagonist is watching the scenes flash by, not being able to act upon them. Though the lyrics stay pretty abstract, Nevin writes about substance abuse. Something seemingly so innocent, turning into a vicious circle of losing control. Scratching guitars, stacked basses and continuous drones give the song an extra dimension of heaviness and fog. Releasing into the bridge, where we experience a moment of clarity, to be soon taken over by old elements. Nevin experiments with telling a story through the use of instrumental language and to be self-interpreted lyrics.
