Nulla: "Blow/Top of the World"
Liverpool band ‘Nulla’ have released their latest lockdown creation, a double-single release titled ‘Blow / Top Of The World’, currently available on all streaming platforms. Recorded & produced themselves, 'Blow' is built upon a neo-soul rhythm section with intricate guitar & synth lines meticulously placed throughout. The chorus expands the groove into a textured, dream-like state, infused with sustained & layered vocals – think D’Angelo meets RHCP. Lyrically, the song challenges the constructs of what it means to be an adult, and staying in touch with the imagination/childlike excitement for life. Also self-produced is 'Top of the World', much like a wilder, unhinged sibling to the first track. Energised with samples & gypsy-jazz motifs, TOTW is about a steampunk summer disco, in a setting where the world is ending and nobody cares for race or class; everybody just wants to get their kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames.
Raised in separate corners of the earth as music goons with a healthy dose of introversion, Nulla invites you to tap into their funk-fuelled bubble, and feast. Each of 4-piece have been meticulously honing their groove chops from the safety of their bedrooms, emerging only for food, rehearsals, and to clap for the NHS. Having honed their craft in Liverpool, UK, the band made a name for themselves locally with a live show injected with a raw, nervous energy, and a dangerously love for improvisation. Whilst on-stage, Nulla create a strangely alluring atmosphere, simultaneously thirst-making & thirst-quenching, and now look to advance in the contemporary direction of DIY recording, with a ‘psych-hop’ double-single release on the horizon. For those equally inspired by RHCP, MF DOOM & Bruce Lee, tune in to check out what’s been hiding in the North West’s underbelly.
Within days of meeting at university, a flurry of fragrant jams propelled the group to the studio, where they established themselves as a capable psych-funk outfit with a knack for a persuasive live show. Frequently gigging and collaborating with the local artists in the Liverpool scene, the band ascended into the underground network, featuring on the Keep It Cryptic line-up in 2018 in addition to several house party events, before performing a sold-out ‘LIPA Talent Showcase’ at Liverpool’s iconic Cavern Club in September 2019.
As they developed sonically, the band drew inspiration from their shared love of the musical golden-age of the 60s and 90s hip-hop, progressing towards the likes of D’Angelo whilst melodically remaining loyal to The Beatles - textbook. With tight drum grooves emulating the expertise of London’s Yussef Dayes and thoughtfully concocted guitar licks that could make Nile Rogers perspire, Nulla have foraged a sweet nectar to bring unto the world, and have named it ‘Juicy Junk’. With each metaphorical sip, the listener is bathed in cosmic delight, landing them somewhere in-between a trifecta of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, D’Angelo and The Pixies, whilst gently easing them into the upcoming decade of a self-produced, genre-bending utopia.
