Up$ell: Summer Girl

Up$ell: Summer Girl

Up$ell grew up as a teenage drug user who fell into the wrong crowd immediately…. Since youth he was a very troubled boy and would be on the wrong side of the law soon after. However, despite being a troublemaker he had an incredible fascination with music. It was his way of escaping his toxic lifestyle and creating a positive one.

After being finally fed up with being in constant battles with the law. He decided he wanted to do better with his life and get an education. He used music to help him cope with his deteriorating mental health due to his life-long drug addiction. Through music he was able to escape his old lifestyle and even eventually go on to law school and graduate from Osgoode Hall of law with a master’s degree. With his changed persona he inspired his troubled friends to do better. However, due to the harsh financial crisis in Toronto, he still could not financially sustain himself to complete his licensing. He works three jobs at the same time just to keep up with bills and on top of that, his family has been struggling with his father being hospitalized for almost a year now due to kidney failure. However, he stayed legit and refused to be tempted back to selling drugs.

Despite all that nothing has been able to take away his happiness and hope. He truly is a very inspiring and kind guy whose music is filled with good vibes. His style inspires chill, happy energy. The name Up$ell was coined from his sales job and being told to constantly “upsell”, but it goes deeper to represent going from selling drugs to selling music. The Summer Girl song shows despite everything that goes on in Toronto it is still a beautiful place to live and to fall in love. Some of the greatest stars rose out of this iconic city. I believe Up$ell will be the next one because he has the talent and the dedication to become a star.

‘Summer Girl’ is a love song that is about a chick that only visits Toronto in the summertime. However, in the winter she can be colder than the snow and be very distant. Everything has opened up and where is she going to spend her summer this year? Well in Toronto of course! The song overall was a fun experience putting it together. You can hear Chris Cook on the adlibs and shoutouts in the song. It gives the song a really nice Jamaican vibe. The song was mixed by Trey and mastered by 2017 Grammy nominated Joao Carvalho. The beauty of this song is that it was all done in Toronto and brings in a nice summer vibe. This song was meant to make you feel good wherever and whenever. Only peace and positivity tings for summer 2022 in Toronto.
