Moonpools: Weak Ankles
With the new single 'Weak Ankles' the Basel-based dreampop band Moonpools led by singer Marcie Nyffeler shows its fragile side and lets you feel heartwarming melancholy.
Moonpools are a five-piece band from Basel, founded by Marcie Nyffeler (vocals/guitar), Jasper Nyffeler (drums) and Francesco Vona (synths) and completed in 2017 by Matthias Gusset (guitar) and David Blum (bass). The latter is known from various Basel projects like Sheila She Loves You, Don't Kill The Beast, Brainchild and Mastergrief.
After their debut EP 'Turbulent Times' which was released in 2019, the band is now back with new material and in a new sonic guise. The songs on their upcoming new EP 'Damaged Goods' will sound louder, more distorted and straightforward. As sources of inspiration for the new sound, idols like Hatchie, Snail Mail, Cocteau Twins and Soccer Mommy are mentioned.
With the second pre-release single 'Weak Ankles' the band presents itself more thoughtful and fragile. The heavily shoegaze-influenced guitars and danceable rhythm section lead the way through the song, while the ethereal synthesizer floats above. Marcie Nyffeler's vocals seem fragile at first, but become more definite as the song progresses, as if she is finding confidence in the words. Because 'Weak Ankles' is about being overwhelmed by your own feelings, "it's not easy to open up and be vulnerable, but that's when beautiful things happen. It's tempting to look for excuses and focus on the things that could go wrong. Sometimes, though, it's important to just let yourself go," Nyffeler says.
The new EP 'Damaged Goods' will be released on August 19th via Young and Aspiring.
