Alibii: But I
ALIBII is the vision of writing partners Courtney Egginton and Will Cumberlege. after meeting whilst studying music in Sydney, with an aspiration to combine some of their favourite music influences of indie rock and dream pop. Beginning with Courtney as the lead vocalist and Will as the multi instrumentalist, the project has evolved from its humble acoustic beginnings into a produced dream pop sound.
“But I” is a song the two have been working on since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, mixing the emotions of being in your early 20s and living in an eight-person share house in the middle of Sydney. Produced by Will, mixed by Adrian Breakspear (Gang of Youths/Clews/Johnny Hunter) and mastered by Ben Feggans at Studios 301, it flows from ambient piano beginnings into an epic build reminiscent of a more electronica-powered Florence and the Machine.
"The lyrics to “But I” cover a multitude of emotions – “We found shelter under the same roof, where it gets crowded in one room" is a reference to moving out with friends and it being difficult to have a moment to yourself, but also it’s a metaphor for shelter through music as an escape to get through hard times. Other lyrics refer to clashing ideas and personalities, and the toxicity that brewed from lockdown. When you’re in this situation, you often try to avoid confrontation and stay on everybody’s good side, but you can end up being caught in the middle and upsetting everyone – hence the lyric “Caught in a cloud of concern, I’m the only one that got hurt”. But in reality, there’s no need to get at each other because the world is going crazy”. – Alibii
