Alicia G: Shake Down
Refined through years of pageantry, and interlaced with a glittering sense of style, Alicia G embodies the world of pop-culture to the brink.
Alicia Guastaferro cultivated her career in Buffalo, New York, being a classically trained vocalist from age eight. What made her stand out was her love of pageantry and dance, as well. In fact, at fifteen years old, Alicia had traveled the United States competing in beauty contests since eleven months of age. When she wasn’t learning music, or living the beauty queen life, her love of cheerleading and academic studies were prominent.
The world got their first look at the soon-to-be reality star when she was approached by the hit series on ABC, Wife Swap. The show made headlines, and when producers had twisted Alicia’s story—portraying an unorthodox and irrevocably damaging defamation of character—the Buffalo native found herself in a world of chaos. The damage grew apparent, and Alicia G suffered from years of mental and physical abuse from those around her. In 2013, Alicia G was interviewed on Dr. Phil regarding these struggles. In the long run, there was only one saving grace: her artistry.
Alicia G began working tirelessly on her musical career—finding herself through the culmination of a zesty charisma and a classy-but-sassy attitude in the world of rap, hip-hop, and pop music. In addition, she began cultivating her own sound through high-energy performances as a songstress and DJ—sharing the stage with the Goo Goo Dolls and playing radio-sponsored events.
Garnering the attention of multi-platinum producer, Andrew Lane (The Backstreet Boys, Miley Cyrus, Becky G), he quickly took note of her talent, and the two began cultivating a pop-polished sound with an unapologetic, in-your-face, lyrical structure. The songs were to be distributed by Drew Right Music Label, and in 2016, the collaboration’s first release, “Pretty Girl” landed at the top of the Independent Music Chart for three weeks making it a success, and strong foundation, for the reality-star.
And yet, if music wasn’t enough, Alicia G was on the verge of an even more monumental success that hadn’t been tapped into: Live Streaming. In March of 2019, Alicia G was recruited to join the ranks of the live streaming app called, BIGO. In less than one year, Alicia G’s audience skyrocketed to over 3.15 million fans that would tune in nightly to see the hip hop princess perform, DJ, and entertain. Her loyal fan base has been termed the AG ARMY.
Now Alicia G has just released a ‘country wide’ anthem ‘Shake Down’ - we believe it’s a worldwide anthem for all women to feel strong, empowered and independent. Alicia G expresses the love of having a hunk / cowboy on her shoulder but states she has her own money. This is a smooth laid back jam perfect for blasting down the freeway with your speaker up and top down.
We recently had the chance to check in with Alicia G and she was kind enough to answer a few interview questions:
Congrats on your new release ‘Shake Down’ tell us about the origin and evolution of ‘Shake Down’
The intention behind “Shake Down” was to show my love of Country Fried Chicken, Horses, and of course country life, food and good times with friends on the farm.
The process of creating the concept was based off the song “Fancy Like” by Walker Hayes, I love how he brought his love a country life to the big screen I thought if he could, so could I!
How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
I describe my sound as fun and flirty with a classic yet modern day sound of country pop!
I think people resonate with my music because it’s easy listening and just makes you wanna smile and can turn any frown upside down!
Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
My musical influences that inspire me and had a major impact on my sound would be a mixture of the modern day Billie Eilish, to a classy Patsy Cline and the fun flirty Shania Twain.
What has been your most memorable performance to date and what is your favourite thing about performing?
My most memorable performance to date was when I opened up the Goo Goo Dolls on the main stage.
My favorite thing about performing is hearing the crowd cheer and making them smile!
