Maia Zakay: You Had 1 Job
Born in London, but raised in Los Angeles, Maia Zakay is the future of R&B music. At only 20 years old, she has developed a sultry, passionate singing style like artists such as Ariana Grande. Maia started singing for fun at the tender age of 3 years old and has never stopped. Although she had some vocal training, her singing and production skills are self-taught, and she obsessed with everything that is music.
Maia wrote her first song at 16 years old in response to a dark time in her life. Now, Maia finds solace in the art of songwriting. What started as a personal form of therapy became Maia’s way of helping others. Her music deeply resonates with people, which has become the driving force of Maia's music career.
During Summer 2020, Maia wrote, co-produced, and released her album, #SpeakUp. The album was co-produced by Stephan Oberhoff, who works closely with legends such as Quincy Jones, David Foster, Barbra Streisand, and more!
Maia has also found fans in the likes of super-producer Scott Storch. Storch, who has worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry including Beyonce, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Lil Kim, Chris Brown, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, and many more. Storch is such a fan, that he collaborated on a song with Maia that is awaiting release. For Maia to have worked with him so early on in her career is only a testament to what’s to come. Not only that, she has worked with Drake’s producer “40” on an unreleased track and was even sought out by Beyonce’s team to write a hook for her and the feedback was incredibly positive. Maia received some great recognition for her album in Music Connection magazine, where only 12 artists are chosen to be featured monthly and Maia was chosen immediately.
Describing her new single “you had 1 job” Maia explains, “I wrote my song “you had 1 job” as a joke at first because I was trying to figure out how to write a song that could be a viral sound on TikTok! I showed my family and management team the song as a joke, but they told me it wasn’t a joke at all and that I need to take it seriously because they believed it was a hit! I thought they were crazy and I couldn’t see the vision till a couple weeks later when they made me professionally record it with a talented award winning producer, Chico Bennet, who brought the sound to the next level!. Once that was done, there was no going back! I fell in love with how the song sounded and how it made me feel and I couldn’t wait for the world to hear it :)
I was really excited to put out this song for people to sing along to when they needed to feel empowered. “You Had 1 Job” is all about if you have ever been CHEATED ON/LIED TO or BETRAYED by someone you trusted, this song is for YOU! SAY IT WITH ME They had 1 job!!!
This song basically wrote itself because it only took me under an hour to complete! For the first time, I gave myself the freedom to not care about everything being perfect. I just sang what came to me and took inspiration from artists like Doja Cat and Lizzo because of how much fun they have with their unique lyric and melody ideas! “
