Angie Fights Crime: Savior of the World
Album Review: Angie Fights Crime - Savior of the World
by Jack Rush
Kansas City’s long-standing indie music project, Angie Fights Crime, returns with Savior of the World, an album that marks a refreshing shift in tone and style. Founded by Brent Kinder in 1997 as a creative outlet alongside his other musical ventures, Angie Fights Crime has evolved through years of experimentation and collaboration. This latest release, launched on March 7, 2025, features the vocal talents of Daniel Jordan, the drumming expertise of Keith Howell, and the mixing and mastering prowess of Robert Rebeck.
A significant departure from the melancholic tones of Full Mingo (2024) and Throwing Shade at God (2023), Savior of the World embraces a more uplifting and dynamic sonic landscape. Originally envisioned as a low-fi guitar-driven collaboration, the album took shape through an organic creative process, incorporating the influences of over five decades of musical experience.
The standout track, Weight of the World, encapsulates the synergy between Kinder and Jordan, with the latter’s Oklahoma roots lending an earthy, heartfelt quality to the vocals. Meanwhile, Forever delivers a deeply moving love song that resonates with emotional sincerity—so much so that Kinder himself was brought to tears upon hearing Jordan’s first take.
The decision to bring in Robert Rebeck for mixing and mastering marks a turning point for Angie Fights Crime. Rebeck, whose work has earned him multiple golden records, fine-tuned the album’s sonic elements to create a polished yet raw authenticity.
Recorded entirely in Kinder’s Kansas City home studio, Savior of the World carries the unmistakable mark of an artist fully in control of his craft while still open to collaboration. Listeners will find an album rich in passion, diversity, and musical depth. Whether or not Weight of the World becomes your favorite, the album as a whole is worth the journey.
For those eager to experience Savior of the World live, Angie Fights Crime will be hosting a release show at Minibar in Kansas City, Missouri, on March 28, alongside local acts Sunflower Ordnance Works and Phase Distorter. This performance promises to be a celebration of an album that truly stands as a testament to perseverance, evolution, and the power of artistic collaboration.
