Borderline Art Space: In Bloom
Borderline to open new independent art space on Lake Lugano
The new independent art space Borderline will be inaugurated on Saturday March 22 in Albogasio, Valsolda, on the Lake of Lugano. Borderline is a non-profit institution created by the young Swiss artist Sebastian Bradley Cerny, who has restored a big space on the lake, and rallied an international group of art lovers and professionals into forming a cultural association in the process. Borderline plans to host a regular program of events from different creative disciplines such as visual art, video, performance and skate boarding. (The venue features a small skate ramp in the gallery space) Borderline will also expand its activities to the surrounding area.
Situated about a mile away from the Italian-Swiss border in Gandria, Borderline presents strong connections with independent art spaces in Ticino – a lively and important scene that often struggles to find locations where to operate with continuity. At the same time, Borderline will enrich the artistic scene of the Province of Como, joining other spaces like Co.CO. (Como Contemporanea) As such, the establishment of Borderline is a remarkable cultural event for the area.
On the occasion of Borderline’s opening exhibition entitled “In Bloom”, Franco Mazzucchelli will present BD-Bicono, a floating sculpture originally exhibited at the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024 and will be installed on the surface of Lake Lugano. The exhibition will also stage a dialogue between Sebastian Bradley Cerny’s Pop paintings and the rarely seen, Expressionist-driven paintings by Swiss journalist and TV presenter Jonas Marti. The show will also feature an installation by the New York-born, Valsolda-based artist and musician Harry Druzd, where a complex game of shadows results in an image representing a well-known modern icon.
The exhibition is curated by Riccardo Lisi, who lives in Valsolda and is mostly active in Ticino. During the opening day there will be art performances. All the artists will be present, except for Jonas Marti, who will meet the audience on the evening of 28 March.
Opening vernissage: Saturday 22 March, 2PM – 8PM
Opening hours: Thursday-Sunday, 3PM – 7PM - Free entry
The exhibition will close on 13 April 2025
