Katie Tich: "Yellow Light"
In her newest single of 2021, “Yellow Light,” singer-songwriter Katie Tich explores new alt-pop and rock flavors while staying true to her indie singer-songwriter roots
Singer-songwriter Katie Tich has a few tricks up her sleeve in her freshly released single, “Yellow Light.” Starting off with a strong beat that yields to a driving, electric guitar-led verse and chorus, the song quickly establishes a consistent rhythm that drives the sound forward. This drive is critical to the sonic metaphor that Tich creates throughout the track: the moment when you are approaching a stoplight that turns yellow.
That may seem like a small moment, but Tich draws striking parallels between driving towards a yellow light and taking steps forward in a new and uncertain relationship.
“There’s a moment when you’re approaching a light and it turns yellow that I think nearly everyone who drives has had. It’s that forced snap judgment—do I have time to make it through the light? Should I put on the gas or slam on the brakes?” These questions led Tich to the idea that eventually became “Yellow Light.” “It’s the same when you’re entering into a new relationship,” she points out.
“Yellow Light” paints a picture of a relationship that’s moving forward, but facing roadblocks ahead. At some point, there has to be a choice—to speed up, move forward and face obstacles together, or slow down and stop, leaving the relationship behind with what could have been. But the tune retains a sense of optimism in the chorus—“I promise you we’ll make it through the yellow light.”
