Kendra & the Bunnies: "Of Thank You"
Kendra Muecke is a singer/songwriter, writer, actress, and published author. She performs under the stage name “Kendra & the Bunnies”, as a psychedelic folk rock Americana and spoken word artist. Her style heavily utilizes the element of storytelling through song, painting a creative experience for the listener. Her mission is founded on peaceful collaborative experience and shared understanding. Kendra’s sound is composed of singing, spoken word, guitar (electric and acoustic), percussion, lead electric guitar, and electronic samples. Under the self-titled genre, “Celtic Americana’ that chants from the valleys of Folk, Western-Rock, and NewSchool Blues”, Kendra aims to bring the listener into thinking about where the roots of folk-americana were founded.
Her new album "of Thank You" has been baking in the oven for quite a bit of time - some of the songs being written a few years ago. The inspiration for this album is inspired by her love for the West. The genre takes on a looming psychedelic folk Americana feel with both rock vibes and electronic elements. The approach is in Kendra's style of the storyteller. Through "of Thank You", she asks, “Who are we as a people? What do we want? How can we move forward?" With immersive imagery of the great American buffalo, writing by candle light, and following one's destiny, Kendra & the Bunnies' third album release is sure to help wiggle you out of those star-spangled blues.
We had the pleasure of checking in with Kendra and she was kind enough to answer a few interview questions:
Welcome Kendra! Congrats on your new release!
How is your new album, “Of Thank You”; different from your previous albums?
My new album "of Thank You" is in a more concise and eerie style and voice than my previous albums.
I really grounded myself in the way I like to sing and write. I like to be haunting, and yet jovial.
Poetic and descriptive. I like to write about love, yes, but on this album, I focused on writing about my perspective on society.
What is your favorite song on the album and why?
Dang! It totally changes all the time. The closest to my heart is "Buffalo Walk", "Well Toiled Routine", and "Turn On".
I love them all!
Tell us about your creative process, is it different with each album or the same?
It depends. I really like to let the projects and songs speak to me. I let the creative inspiration guide the process.
"of Thank You" was a bit different though in the way that the songs and lyrics were written.
I wrote "Buffalo Walk" originally as two different poems. One was titled "Colorado" and the other, "Buffalo Walk".
I wrote "Colorado" at a Sound Tribe Sector 9 concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
If you could dedicate this album to someone, who would it be?
Honestly, I want to say: my crush and my past-self.
There are so many things that I have been through and triumphed over in the past few years that it's like, "Hey, this is for me."
These songs are comforting, and it's crazy because it reminds me to show self-love to myself and others more often.
What inspired this album?
America. I love the country. It's dang crazy sometimes though. Especially with the back door dealings and odd media reporting.
I have been writing about these for years. Since like 2013, but now, it is super relevant. 2020. "It was the best of times. It was the worst of times..."
