Marsy Mars: "Verseus"
‘Verseus’ is the superb sophomore album from artist, Marsy Mars. The album was composed in Mars' contrapuntal style, in an attempt to create a topography of London as it was shortly before the onset of coronavirus. It does not do so by assessing physical spaces, which function merely as details, but by looking at the spiritual character of the place. Structurally, the album is organised into three 'mixes', each introduced by a short explanatory work; the first two mixes demonstrate marked continuity (in tempo, rhythm and, to a lesser extent, theme), while the third and final mix betrays no such continuity whatsoever. There are manifold links between "Verseus" and Marsy Mars' debut, "Mars Lives".
The album was composed and recorded entirely under lockdown, performed entirely by the artist. In addition to all vocals and programming - except those of the character 'DJ Snifter', played by Seeko on "A Boshack for the Girl" - Mars plays electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, mandolin, violin, drums, ocarina, repinque, surdo, synthesiser, piano, organ, bongos, congas, finger cymbals, wind chimes, orchestral bells, woodblocks, and tuneless whistle.
