Mary's Lye: Forever Girl
Mary’s Lye, a powerful grunge/alt-rock trio hailing from Worcestershire UK, is excited to announce the release of their latest single, “Forever Girl,” out now. Since forming in late 2023, the band—comprising Michael Thompson (vocals/guitar), Harry Anson (drums), and Georgie Lane (bass guitar)—has quickly established itself as a standout act with a sound that is entirely their own.
Mary’s Lye takes pride in being an originals-only band, refusing to perform covers and instead focusing on crafting fresh, authentic music that draws from a wide range of influences. From the heavy riffs of Led Zeppelin to the raw energy of Nirvana, the band channels iconic influences into something distinctly Mary’s Lye. “We love everything from classic rock to grunge, but we like to think that Mary’s Lye sounds like Mary’s Lye,” says Michael Thompson.
The new single, “Forever Girl,” marks a slight departure from their typical sound, offering a more upbeat, melodic tune that Thompson describes as “grunge pop.” “It’s more upbeat than our previous releases and is one of the only songs we play in an out-and-out major key. I dare say one could call it grunge pop! It was, weirdly, inspired by Leonard Cohen's 'That's No Way to Say Goodbye' and The Who's 'Glow Girl'—two very different songs.” Despite this shift, the rest of their upcoming album, set for release later this year, remains true to the blues-infused grunge style that fans have come to love.
In 2023 and 2024, Mary’s Lye gigged extensively across the Midlands, performing at numerous events and festivals, including a memorable opening set at the Custom Rock and Blues Festival in Derby. Earlier this year, the band recorded two EPs—“Matter of Medication” and “What Happens in the Underparts”—both of which are now available on all major streaming platforms. The new album was recorded at Load Street Studios and produced by renowned international musician and producer Rob Groucutt.
