Sometimes you need reassurance, you need balm, comfort, the knowledge that there’s somebody out there who cares. Right this second, that somebody, that comfort, is Reid Anderson with ‘My Dearest Friends’.
Soft, acoustic guitar and string driven, simple but luscious, with Reid’s customarily stunning vocals, it’s a song for everyone, a song that tells you there’s someone who will ‘love you all beyond the end’ just as long as you hold on. “I’ll be a part of all you see.” It’s a beautiful promise that there’s more to come.
‘My Dearest Friends’ is the 3rd single from Liverpool singer songwriter Reid Anderson, a ‘Sonneto’ to remind us of what might actually be the important bits in this ever increasing digital cosmos we are all being gradually sucked into. Reid Anderson writes songs that remind us of yesteryear, and who would believe that the past could feel so fresh? so beautiful.. So human?
As others give us some nice beats, licks and tricks, Anderson gives us emotions, soul and melody... and boy does Anderson always give us beautiful melodies. It’s something that seems to have been ingrained in Liverpool’s musical output. Where its neighbour Manchester had the swagger, Liverpool always had the melody and was never afraid to use it, leaving even swaggering Mancs at times yearning for their own ‘Mersey Paradise’.
Looking at it another way.. for those of us that can at times be prone to getting lost in our own impending sense of mortality, pondering how we would like to be remembered by nearest and dearest.. wondering what song will spark cherished memories that will have them sobbing in the pews when we finally spin off our new AI generated version of this mortal coil?
Will it be ‘My Way’? meh.. ‘Angels’? no disrespect Robbie but it's been done to.. er.. death. How about Kirsty MacColl’s version of ‘Thank you for the days’? better, much better in fact, but.. if we are playing song poker I will see you on ‘Thank You For The Days’ and I will raise you with ‘My Dearest Friends’ by Reid Anderson. Not in a morbid ‘woe is me’ way, far from it. More in a McCartney and Lennon (yes that way round) at their most honest ‘heart strings pulling’ kinda way. Or a Simon and Garfunkel, ‘For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her’ kinda way.. reminding us of our humanity, our love, the stark honesty and simplicity at the root of it all when all the gloss, glitter and filters are finally stripped away.
