If I Die Tonight: Clouds (Oh, What A Day)
If I Die Tonight is an alt-rock/rock band spread across Manchester and London. The band consists of Nathaniel Jepegnanam and Jacob Saunders. They both cover all instruments on the recordings between the two of them and gig with a additional musicians on guitar. The pair have been the rhythm section in several bands and always have retained a connection between Jacob on bass and Nat on drums. From here they decided to write music together that still retains their rhythmic sensibilities with bass and drums at the forefront and raw, emotional vocals sat on top. The main musical influences include; Deftones, Nirvana, Thrice and Wolf Alice.
They have been silent on social media for a while whilst working on 9 tracks, all produced by themselves. “We wanted to create a body of work before relaunching so we could keep releasing music for a year and hopefully build a fanbase without losing momentum”. The band recorded all drums for their upcoming tracks in the studios at the University of Huddersfield, UK and then all other instruments in their houses using pillows and blankets for soundproofing.
The first of these singles, “Clouds (Oh, What A Day)” will be out on 24/05 and features London based artist ‘Austel’ following the release of her debut album earlier this year. Together, the three of them have created a brooding, atmospheric track that builds to an explosion of emotion. "Clouds (Oh, What A Day) is the most vulnerable and raw song we have ever written". The song explores themes of the effects that the weather and specifically the clouds can have on moods and mindsets. It was written during lockdown and is a direct reference the condition ‘Seasonal Affective Disorder’.
“The exact cause of SAD is not fully understood, but it's often linked to reduced exposure to sunlight during the shorter autumn and winter days. The main theory is that a lack of sunlight might stop a part of the brain called the hypothalamus working properly, which may affect the production of serotonin in the brain” - NHS
The song is designed to take the listener on a journey as it slowly builds to a sudden drop featuring a vunarable acoustic guitar and vocal. From here it erupts to an instrumental with drums and distorted electric guitars followed by the same lines of words sang over and over again. “Here this, the clouds control me, the sun saves me, in grey he paints me...”.
The music video for the song will be released on the same day and was an entirely DIY project by the band who shot and edited the video around Winter Hill in Bolton, UK with a cloud covered distant view of Manchester as the backdrop.
If I Die Tonight plan to continue their next wave of music releases by following Clouds (Oh, What A Day) with another single in July, one in August and then an EP entitled, “What A Time To Be Alive”, in September. The band intend to begin a string of live performances in tandem with the release of the EP.
