Sabrina Carmen: "Dreaming Wide Awake"
"Dreaming Wide Awake” was created by California-grown songwriter Sabrina Carmen and friends during the 2020 pandemic. Scheduled to drop on Aug. 13th, the new cinematic pop track explores escapism and transcendence. “Dreaming Wide Awake” is a collaboration between Sabrina, Rebecca McBride, Rebekah Wilbur, Jamie Miller and Matt Richert, who all came into contact online during the pandemic, and crafted the song together via zoom. With bases in different time zones spanning California, Virginia and Chicago, the team has yet to meet in person, but feels a surreal closeness. “If the deep connection is there, the creativity can be limitless,” Sabrina says, “Even on zoom.”
Sabrina’s voice has often been described as “sultry," buttery," and “pillowy like a feather waltz.” Sabrina can be seen singing on Jimmy Kimmel with Youngblood Hawke & Thirty Seconds to Mars, on The Late Late Show with James Corden, and singing background vocals for Janelle Monáe. From 2015-2019, she went under the moniker MadLyn in honor of her mother (who passed away from breast cancer when she was 13). During this time, she released songs and music videos, which collectively, surpassed 400k views on YouTube, and entered radio charts. In 2020, Sabrina took back ownership of her name, choosing to honor her mother instead by leading the kind of life she would have wanted for her.
This brings Sabrina full circle to the release of “Dreaming Wide Awake;” a song filled with introspective songwriting, self-discovery, moody vocals, and atmospheric soundscapes that represent her evolving artistry. At present, Sabrina is intent on creating even more music within this cinematic pop sub-genre, with plans to pitch “Dreaming Wide Awake” and others for film and television. While the recording may sound polished, it did not arrive at the final result without numerous revisions and one funny occurrence that happened during production. “This track is so fire Matt’s computer blew up in the middle of production,” Sabrina recalls, “Literally. Apple had to send him a new MAC.”
The artwork for “Dreaming Wide Awake” was crafted by Dorota Nowacka, visually depicting Sabrina on a boat amidst a sea of clouds, looking to “the compass of her heart” to guide her. “This song will surely give listeners a sneak peek into wishes I have for myself and for others,” Sabrina says, “May humans never lose sight of their reverie.”
