Saul Redhill: "New Jerusalem"
Saul Redhill, 29, is a singer-songwriter, composer, lyricist, multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Toronto. Born in London UK to South African parents, he moved to Toronto at two years old. Music was always in the air in his home, as his father played the violin with friends in duets and string trios and his older sister played the piano while his younger sister played the cello. Saul started playing the violin aged seven and played in youth orchestras up until his acceptance at the Etobicoke School of the Arts High School. Here, he taught himself electric bass, joined one of the school’s jazz ensembles, and played in some jazz-rock power trios.
After high school Saul completed his B.Sc. at the University of Toronto, where he also recorded an EP in 2011 with his 4-piece band: Lyra. After disbanding in 2013, Saul began working on his own solo material through his project Present Waves. He wrote, recorded, and played all the instruments (save drums) and released the “Wakeup Shot EP” in the summer of 2014. The record received online acclaim from Hype Machine, Obscured Sound, Grayowl Point (highest possible rating), Going Solo, and Dots and Dashes. Exploring multiple genres like psychedelia, garage, folk, and alt-country, the EP was nonetheless cohesive and marked a turning point in the young musician’s career.
“New Jerusalem” is Saul’s first release since 2014. In between releases he obtained his M.Sc. in Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore in 2016, then moved back to Toronto to work at Cancer Care Ontario, volunteered with a humanitarian NGO in Jerusalem in 2018, moved back to the UK for personal reasons in 2019, and came back to Toronto the day the quarantine began in 2020. Just shy of his third decade, Saul has seen and experienced what most would in a lifetime. This album is his testament up to this point. Saul looks forward to breaking new ground as a composer, with new projects on the horizon including a follow-up album and documentary score.
